May is always a good month in the Irish household. We celebrate Mother’s Day, Pentecost Sunday, for Sherri her senior students are done at the end of this month, spring is in full bloom with flowers, leaves on the trees, oh, and grass to mow—yipee!! However, warmer temperatures always cheer us up!

For the church May is a favored month as well. Every Sunday we celebrate something that focuses us on Christ and His church. The first Sunday of the month we celebrate Holy Communion, a time to remember the sacrifice that Jesus made for our sins.

The second Sunday of May is Mother’s Day, or the festival of the Christian home. Of course mothers are instrumental in raising children who not only believe in Jesus Christ, but also aid in training them to be productive members of society. When moms and dads work together they build a family that brings honor and glory to God. The family may not be perfect, we all seem to have skeletons in our closets, but there is strength in sharing life and faith together which builds strong bonds for generations and beyond. I thank God for my mom and dad for they helped me to build my life on a firm foundation, Jesus Christ.

The third Sunday is Ascension Sunday. On this Sunday we remember Jesus’ last day on earth when he was caught up in the clouds and promised that he would return in the same manner. Even now I keep an eye to the sky in hopes that Jesus will come through the clouds and claim his church and reveal the truth of who he is to a world that is lost or seeking other gods.

The four Sunday of May is Pentecost Sunday, the day we celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit as it landed on the disciples in the upper room and gave them the power to heal the sick, cast out demons, and share the message of Christ to a global community in their own language. Thousands came to believe in Christ, thus the first Christian church was formed and hasn’t stopped in over 2,000 years. The church grew through times of persecution and great trials and even though it has now splintered into many denominations, the central focus of the church has always been and will continue to be Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, the Bridegroom who will be coming through the clouds, Hallelujah!

The fifth Sunday is Trinity Sunday when we celebrate that mysterious union of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, god in three persons, blessed Trinity. Of course all through this month we will be learning about and hopefully practicing a few spiritual disciplines and using them in a way that will strengthen and build our faith. Don’t miss out on what God is doing in our homes, our churches, and our lives. We are making disciples, and through that God will change the world—at least our little corner of it!

Don’t miss out, God isn’t finished with us yet!!

Blessing in Christ, Pastor Denny
